Eighty7 has a brand new brand on board – welcome to North Sea Collaborations. You can find their first design, the Tulip lampshade right here
‘Tulip’ is the first design put into production by design duo North Sea Collaborations. It is made from Nordic birch plywood and the best Italian paper, which provides a beautifully natural finish to a clean and graceful design. Made up of laser-cut sheets of paper, a simple 2D form transforms into an elegant 3D shape and when assembled, the whole light creates a distinctive pattern on the ceiling and walls when lit. The paper also ensures a soft, comfortable light is achieved and the Tulip sets the scene perfectly in any interior.
Tulip comes flatpacked – but this is not a flatpack as you know it. Inside the luxurious, well designed box, you will find firstly a certificate stating the batch- and edition-number of your shade. Next all the components you need to assemble your lampshade are wrapped in tissue and with easy-to-follow instructions. And the best part is, you need absolutely no glue or screws to put the Tulip together!
In short, it follows the Scandinavian mantra of ‘form and function’ to the letter.
Nick & Isaac, the duo behind North Sea Collaborations, are long term friends, since meeting during their respective studies in Newcastle. Now based on opposite sides of the North Sea, with Nick working as a visual artist in Newcastle and Isaac being a practicing architect in Oslo, they have created North Sea Collaborations with a vision to develop simple, elegantly design objects, drawing inspiration from simple, but good design as well as natural materials.
The Tulip was born when Isaac created a handcrafted prototype for his own home in 2014. After Nick visiting in 2015, they decided to develop the design and put it into production. After some further work to perfect everything from design to production to retail strategy, the Tulip is now being handcrafted in the UK and sold through mainly independent retailers like ourselves.
North Sea Collaborations are currently working on their next steps, and I for one am really excited to see what the future holds for this brilliant new company!
